Mahar Lagmay

Alfredo Mahar Francisco Lagmay, Ph.D. is a Filipino geologist known for Project NOAH or the Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards launched by the Department of Science and Technology. He is also the executive director of Project NOAH and currently professor at the National Institute of Geological Sciences of the University of the Philippines Diliman.
== Education and career ==
Lagmay finished his bachelor's degree in geology from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1987, master of science degree in geology also from UP, and doctor of philosophy in geology from the University of Cambridge. His expertise on disaster mitigation allowed him to led DOST's Project NOAH as Executive Director in 2012. Project NOAH has been dubbed as the country's leading disaster prevention and mitigation program.〔
He has published detailed analysis of major disasters in the Philippines such as the Guinsaugon landslide, Mayon eruptions, typhoons Ondoy, Sendong, Pablo, and Yolanda, and storm surges.〔 He was part of the Philippine panel on the claim of Benham Rise in the United Nations Commission on the Law of the Sea.〔
In 2013, he was awarded the Outstanding Filipino for Geology and Earth Science.〔 He was awarded as "WikiPinoy of the Year" by WikiPilipinas in 2014 for “empowering the public with open information and insight into the significant issues affecting the country today.” He was awarded the Plinius Medal by the European Geosciences Union on 15 April 2015, in Vienna, Austria. He was also a radio personality. He co-hosted ''RED Alert'' on DZMM with reporter Atom Araullo and Ted Esguerra. Their radio program, RED Alert, was recognized on the 9th Hildegarde Awards of St. Scholastica College on 2015. The program was also given the Communication Management Award of Merit for the Multi-Audience Communication category by the Philippine Quill Awards for 2014.
He also acts as a consultant to the World Bank〔〔 and member of the Philippine-American Academy of Science and Engineering since 2011.
